Breitling watches – life saver of aviators
Breitling is a familiar name in watchmaking industry. It’s pretty easy to guess its origin, so why not give it a try? Have you got the answer? Yes, Breitling is another Swiss brand whose headquarter is based in Switzerland. The company was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier. Their watches are known for chronometers with high precision designed for aviators.
While many other watchmakers are more into moto racing (like Certina) or diving activities (like Panerai), Breitling has strong and long-lasting connection with aviation. Breitling has been sponsoring aeronautical events, such as the first circumnavigation of the globe by balloon, the aerobatics teams including Breitling Jet Team and Breitling Wingwalkers.

However, the Breitling company we have today is not what it used to be. In 1979, Breitling was in a serious financial crisis, so the owner decided to declare bankruptcy and sold their assets to Ernst Schneider. The brand therefore was possessed by the Schneider family. In the past, Breitling used movements made by Valjoux, ETA and Venus rather than having their movement manufactured in-house. It was not until 2009 that the company developed the B01 which is an in-house automatic and column wheel technology for their Breitling Chronomat 01 in 1942 and Navitimer 01 in 1952.

All Breitling chronometers are certified by COSC (the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres). Their subsequent timepieces, therefore, are qualified for aviators - the Navitimer became the official timekeeper of the APOA Pilot Association. Breitling released the Breitling Emergency watch with a radio transmitter for civil aviation whose signal can be received at 90 nautical miles (167km) in normal conditions. This watch proved to be a life-saver when two British helicopters were rescued in Antartica in 2003 after activating the signal. An Alaskan hunter was saved almost ten years later. Breitling released a new version of the Emergency watch in April 2013 with the transmit upgraded with separate rechargeable battery.
